Divorce: Preparation for Mediation
Couples are generally expected to attend mediation before applying to the court for a divorce.
The purpose of Mediation is to help the couple reach agreement on key issues such as child custody, property division and finances in an amicable and cost effective way. Court proceedings can be lengthy and extremely costly, not to mention stressful and emotionally draining.
Sometimes however, people are not in the right space emotionally or psychologically for the mediation process to begin, the very thought of it can bring about feelings of fear, distrust and anger.
For example, it might feel like your partner is rushing forward with the divorce process whilst you have not yet come to terms with the relationship ending.
There are times when a spouse has instructed a solicitor and if you don't understand the mediation process, mediation might feel like you're being led into an ambush.
Not knowing who to trust or turn to is isolating and overwhelming which is likely to impede the mediation process and obstruct a positive outcome.
Preparation for Mediation is an impartial space to discuss your concerns, thoughts and feelings with a view to assist you in reaching an understanding going forward.
